The village of Guadalest is one of the most charming in the province of Alicante . It is surrounded by the Aitana, Serella and Xorta mountain ranges and is a historic site.
It was once a military stronghold and still today boasts ancient fortifications and dates back to 715AD. There are two areas to the village, the fort, high up on the mountain where much of the population lived behind the high protective walls and the small houses that run down the hillside and towards the gate of San José, which boast many small streets and squares amongst which are a variety of small museums, cafés and restaurants. Beware though, in the summer Guadalest attracts many visitors and it can be rather busy, although the views from the square out over the reservoir and mountain ranges are magnificent.
